Installing a residential pool brings excitement and anticipation! The family will be looking forward to that first swim, especially the kids. But, with that excitement you need to add a generous dose of caution. Water (including hot tubs and pools of all sizes) can be dangerous and must be treated with respect. To keep everyone safe and enjoying your refreshing oasis, we recommend the following tips.
#1. Barriers
Each municipality has their own regulations for pool fencing/barriers but the common thread is to ensure the water is appropriately enclosed. The fence should be 4 – 5 feet tall with no large gaps. A self-closing, self-latching and locked gate needs a latch high enough to be out of reach for young children.
#2. Supervise Closely
Kids are constantly on the move and they are fearless! Ensure that everyone understands the rules of your pool and that includes adult supervision at all times. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly so parents need to be constantly alert with young children around. This is especially true with inground pools, so be clear with guests that kids need to be supervised when using the pool.
#3. Rescue Equipment
Hopefully you will never need it, but you should have rescue equipment on hand and in good condition. This may include life rings, floatation devices and a reaching pole. Ensure everyone is familiar with what to do in an emergency. This might include grandparents, neighbours and babysitters.
We recommend coming up with an Emergency Action Plan. Take some time and think about what needs to happen in the event of an emergency. Work out a signal with your family members and document safety procedures. Review your plan to ensure everyone is familiar with it and is ready to act if the need arises.
#4. Learn to Swim
You will never look back and regret swimming lessons. In fact, they could save a life! What a great skill to learn and it’s an excellent form of exercise that can carry you from childhood to your senior years. If you or your kids don’t know how to swim, invest in some lessons. Kids are amazingly fast learners and you will be surprised how quickly they catch on.
#5. CPR and First Aid
Does someone in your household know CPR and First Aid? There are multiple options available in London, Ontario and most communities offer this type of training. It is handy to have, not just for pool owners! Invest in a class and be sure to update your certification.
#6. Hire a Professional
To ensure that your equipment is working properly, hire a professional each year when it’s time to open the pool. This individual will check the safety cover, fence and latch, electrical components and drain covers. Ensure there are no sharp edges, rips or exposed screws that could catch on a bathing suit or entangle long hair. Starting off the season with a good safety check will put your mind at ease. Our service and maintenance team can help ensure your pool is ready for the season.
#7. Clean Up
If possible, use a cover on your pool when it’s not in use. Put away all the toys when you’re done. Children are curious and can move quickly, so don’t leave anything around the water that would seem intriguing. Also, be sure to keep chemicals locked in a safe location.
