Business Starts With Family Roots
After immigrating to Canada from The Netherlands, John Guldemond started a small business based on his family’s roots in landscaping. John grew and sold plants but soon his modest company expanded to accommodate customer requests for designing backyard pools and in 1950 Hollandia was founded. At the time, this niche service was reserved only for the wealthy and seen as a real luxury. But, as time passed, more and more families were installing a backyard pool.
Hollandia flourished with its landscaping expertise and stayed current on pool trends, ranging from concrete to fiberglass. In 1980, John retired and transitioned the business to his daughters Christina and Annette and sons-in-law Walter Schmoll and Ed Spitters. Walter and Ed ran the company together until the unfortunate and untimely passing of Ed in 2011.
In 1994, Todd McCormick joined the construction department and eventually moved into a management position. Todd’s construction experience prior to working at Hollandia gave him the independence and leadership skills required to take on the role. He eventually became Vice President and a partner in the business alongside Walter.
Hollandia currently specializes in custom concrete and vinyl residential pools & spas, and top tier commercial aquatic recreational, training and competition facilities, leaving its mark across the Nation. Based out of London Ontario, the home office and retail store offers customers and clients exceptional support and service to provide ultimate satisfaction through all phases of pool and spa ownership.
Branching Out With Commercial Pools
The seasonality of pool installations in Canada meant Hollandia needed to lay their staff off over the winter months. Hollandia didn’t like the thought of possibly losing their great employees and wanted to find a way to keep them on year-round. The solution was to broaden their reach with public and commercial pools. This newly tapped market has kept their crews busy throughout the winter and established Hollandia as a trusted and established brand.
