Fibreglass pools. Good or bad idea?

We’ll start by saying that Hollandia Pools do not offer or install fibreglass swimming pools. Naturally we are aware of them, and if we wanted to we could offer them to our clients, but we do not.

Why is that? There are many reasons. First is visual. While these shells often look quite nice, the question you have to ask yourself is how long will it stay that way.

Here are some potential issues to consider…

First – Colour matching.

Fibreglass swimming pools often have vibrant and vivid colours. If and when you need to make any repairs to the pool (due to anything from issues as small as scratches or chips) it can be very challenging to match the colour. This issue only gets worse over time as the shells fade from both sun as well as any pool chemical damage or impact.

Second – Fading.

While we are on this topic, the aforementioned fading itself is an issue anyone considering a fibreglass swimming pool must seriously consider. As mentioned, the dynamic and vivid colors that dazzle when you first get them can start looking very worn over the course of years and start becoming more of an eyesore each and every day.

Third – Spider cracks.

As the fibreglass pool shell itself is coated, if you have a fibreglass swimming pool you can find yourself with fine cracks in the surface layer (aka spider cracks). These spider cracks can occur due to a variety of issues in everything from the manufacturing process, in the course of shipping or even during installation. While these spider cracks will not typically compromise the integrity of the pool itself, you again again you will find yourself with a pool starts looking less and less appealing as time goes on and those cracks will likely be the first (and last) thing you see each and every time you look at your pool.

Fourth – Installation.

Another issue we have with fibreglass pools has nothing to do with the visual aspect, but instead another issue… getting that giant shell into your yard! While there are those rare few exceptions, installing ANY pool (concrete, vinyl or fibreglass) can be difficult and fraught with challenges. Fibreglass swimming pools more often that not enhance this issue.

Since your fibreglass pool is one giant shell, unless you have exceptional access to your yard, everything from power lines, trees, fences, access and so on can make actually putting the fibreglass pool in your yard quite a challenge and in some cases all but impossible. Having said all of that, if you are determined to put a fibreglass pool in your yard, ensure that the pool company installing it properly backfills all the surrounding edges of the pool with the appropriate fill (not the excavated dirt or organic material). If this is not done properly you can end up with cracks, leak issues, plumping shifting, bulging walls and other issues.
